Immigration Bureau / Customs

People flying to Japan need to follow the procedures at the Immigration and to clear Customs both when leaving the previous country and entering Japan.

Immigration is where immigration officers review the validity of foreigners’ passports and visas, the legitimacy of their reasons for staying in Japan, and legal permission for entering Japan.

At Customs, officers check for items illegally brought into Japan by foreigners. The latest information related to Japanese Customs and Immigration Bureau can be obtained at embassy of Japan and tourist bureaus or on their websites. It is often the case that people who bring items that require special attention (ex. liquor and tobacco) have to fill out extra forms to report to the Customs.
